Are You Adding More Wrinkles by Sleeping?

As you are aware, wrinkles do not show up on skin of aging people. It can surface even for those in the late twenties and early thirties. That's because age is only one of the many factors that may cause fine lines to appear and eventually deepen.
However, it seems counter intuitive to even think that sleeping can introduce more wrinkles. We are told to sleep for 7 to 8 hours a day so that we will look young, didn't we? Some may wonder is this a myth. Apparent it's not.
Recent discovery shows that sleeping posture can lead to wrinkles. Sleeping on the face produces more wrinkles and is termed as "sleeping posture induced wrinkles".
Indeed, there are truths that you can add more wrinkles by sleeping, if you sleep with an bad posture. For example, sleeping with face down as agreed by the experts.
How is that possible? When sleeping on the face, what happen is that certain facial muscles are compressed for a prolong period of time. It does not matter whether sleeping with or without pillow or purely on mattress, sleeping this way cause the muscles to stretch and contract. This tends not to be a problem when we are still young as the muscles will return to the relax state. However as age catches up the skin loses its elasticity and progressively lose this ability. Eventually, lines start to surface which turns into wrinkles.
If you like to sleep face down, it makes sense to change the sleeping habit. Sleep on the back instead of the face so as not to introduce wrinkles. Easy to say but not easy to do since sleeping habit is not something you can change overnight.
Granted that it is difficult initially, but it can be done with conscious effort. But changing sleeping posture is only one of the many factors that cause wrinkles to develop. It has to work in tandem with proper skin care, diet, lifestyle (including quitting smoking and having enough sleep) to work.
Let's look at wrinkles prevention from a more complete view.
Good skin care regime goes a long way. Like they always said, "There is no ugly woman, only lazy ones". It rings truth with skin care since effort is needed.
First, choose your facial cleanser wisely. Use only mild, non-comedogenic cleanser. This is important as it does not clog up pores and also keep bacteria away to give you healthier skin.
Next is to moisturize the skin daily. This helps to prolong the elasticity of the skin. It is a common fact that dry skin is less elastic and tends to sag more easily giving rise to wrinkles. If you live in places with low air humidity, install a humidifier in your room. This helps to reduce moisture loss from the skin.
The third thing is to exfoliate the skin to remove the dead skin to reveal new and younger skin.
Increase the level of antioxidant is the fourth thing on the list. This can come from foods, supplements or even beauty care products.
Antioxidant is important to fight and neutralize the effects of toxins in the body or skin. But where do the toxins come from?
It can be from the working environment, the junk foods and even our cosmetic products. Most of the time, the toxins enter our body unknowingly but they can accumulate on our skin as well.
Their detrimental effects show up in different form and wrinkles is one of them. By eating more berries and vegetables like broccoli, you can increase the level of antioxidants. If that is not possible, consider taking antioxidant supplements.
Even though exposure to sun causes skin aging, it is impractical to stay indoor all the time. However, to minimize the harmful effects of sun ray, make sure to apply sun protection lotion before stepping out of the house.
For smokers, quit the habit. Without going into details, all of us agree that smoking can never be beneficial. Essentially, it robs the nutrients away from your skin and accelerates aging and wrinkles manifestation.
In the search for the magical anti-wrinkles formula, most people overlooked the simple thing they can do now to create a long term positive effect.
One of them is drinking plenty of water. While 8 glasses per day is the suggested minimum, you should drink more if possible. Water helps to purge the toxins out of the body and also aid in weight loss. Another incentive to start drinking water immediately.
The final point is to have sufficient rest and less alcohol. Sleep at least 7.5 hours per day but make sure not to sleep with the face down so as not to develop more wrinkles.
