Four Areas to Improve to Help You Age Healthier

There are several keys to leading a healthy, vibrant lifestyle as we get older. Certainly what we put into our bodies will go a long way to determining what we get out of them as we age. But there are other factors other than diet which will determine how healthy we are as we age. Exercise, how you sleep, and a positive mental attitude are a few of the ingredients for healthy aging, and quite obviously they are all intertwined; all of these factors fit together like pieces of a puzzle, and to make the picture complete all the pieces have to be present.
We will take a look at the various factors that will improve our lives and how they will relate to each other. Finally we will consider some of the things to avoid which prevent us from achieving our healthy aging goals.
1. Diet. We might as well face it; we can't eat like we could when we were younger. As we point out in recommended caloric intake, with every year we add the number of daily calories we are allowed to consume goes down. Even by eating the right foods and doing regular detoxing, our liver and other organs just don't run as efficiently as they did when we were kids. But there is no need to fight it. Just understand that it is part of the aging process and make the necessary adjustments.
2. Exercise. This is so important for everybody, but as you age it will literally keep you alive longer. Even walking, gardening or playing golf is helpful, but if you are able to do higher intensity workouts those exercises will be even better. They keep the metabolism at a higher level, promote better blood circulation, and produce endorphins that will make you have a more positive outlook on life. And as we know, if we perceive the world to be a better place, studies have shown it diminishes the aging process.
3. Sleeping better. Exercise will have a great deal to do with getting better sleep, and sleeping better means more energy during the day. As we exercise during the day, stress and anxiety will be reduced, giving us longer and deeper sleep. Studies have shown people who sleep better have an easier time controlling their weight, which of course makes it less of a burden to exercise. One area feeds off another.
4. Have an active social life. Companionship is such a huge part of growing older with a great attitude. It helps to be around people who are also active and have a similarly positive attitude that you have.
A few of the things we must avoid are the use of nicotine and other drugs and chemicals, limiting as much as possible the use of medication, and the overuse of alcohol and caffeine, especially late at night. Hopefully some of these hazardous habits you never picked up over the years, but now would be the perfect time to kick them if you did. Enjoying life to the fullest as you age is a greater joy than any of these bad habits that are hazardous to your health could possibly be.
