There was a time, when people flocked to the beauty parlour to have their tresses curled, waved and permed. While this is still a popular hairstyle choice, more and more people are choosing a sleek and straight style with crisp edges and clean lines. While almost anyone can curl their locks at least temporarily, straight hair can present some challenges.
If your hair is slightly to moderately wavy, a straightening balm and vented straightening iron will probably do the trick. Using a vented straightener will allow you to work on it while it is still slightly damp, without burning your mane. This hairtype will also benefit from shampoos and conditioners that cater to sleek looking locks.
However, if you have curly locks that's full of bounce, you have likely noticed that as the day wears on, your curls start to return. Your mane has a natural spring to it that is difficult to keep under control. In this case, you should look into a hair treatment to chemically relax it so it won't revert back to bouncy.
Chemical straighteners, or relaxers, work much like a perm does, but with the opposite effect. First it breaks down the natural sulphur and nitrogen components of the hairshaft and then uses a neutralizer to reinvent its direction. So if your hair naturally holds a lot of curl, this can be a great way to tame it and smooth it out.
This type of procedure is highly effective, but not without risk. Over use of chemicals can damage your hair, causing breakage and brittleness. Straightening your hair with a relaxer is usually repeated about every eight weeks, as new (curly) hair grows in. It's best to have it done by a professional hair stylist who can assess your hair condition and advise you on good after care products to keep your hair sleek, smooth and in the best possible shape.
