The ketogenic diet

Ketogenic diet is usually used in severe forms of epilepsy in children. The diet was invented in the 20s of last century in the U.S., where nutritionists and pediatricians have paid attention to the specific biochemical processes in the human body during starvation, which leads to decrease in frequency of epileptic seizures. The ketogenic diet does not require long-term starvation. The method - a specially designed diet of the child, which reduced the amount of carbohydrates (sugars) and constitute the bulk of food fats. In digestion fats are transformed into specific metabolites, the so-called ketone bodies, which enter the brain and provide the anticonvulsant effect.

The content in the diet of essential nutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) is calculated in a certain ratio, which is determined by the physician. During treatment, this ratio can vary.

Ketogenic diet is usually practiced for the treatment of children from one year to 12 years, but there is evidence of its effectiveness in adults. The use of the ketogenic diet can reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures (in some cases - to achieve a complete remission), improved memory, attention patients. An important advantage is the ability to reduce the dose received antiepileptic drugs. For some patients, the effect of the ketogenic diet can be so severe that allows you to completely abolish medicines. The effect of the ketogenic diet occurs gradually over the first 3 months after initiation. It usually takes a long-term treatment (2-3 years), after which is mainly observed sustained improvements, continuing and normal diet. Thus, there is no need to use the ketogenic diet for life.

Side effects of the ketogenic diet is not enough. Basically - it is a temporary dysfunction of the gastrointestinal (constipation) and the lack of certain vitamins that can easily be corrected with the help of modern vitamin-mineral complexes.
